ain't nobody making that smooth soul music anymore, Mr. Rawls is here to kick you in the
head. After working with the likes of Joe Tex, Z.Z. Hill and O.V. Wright for years, Johnny
Rawls knows his stuff, and on Here We Go , he's the creator and producer of a fine
collection of Jackson, Mississippi-style soul/blues. Most of the tunes here have a gently
rocking style that brings to mind early Clarence Carter, or later Latimore, and Johnnie
Taylor, but without the synths and background vocals. Rawls' production values here are
simple and clean, but don't let that fool you. He knows how to make a great sound from a
bare-bones combo. His voice is one of those things that, when coupled with a funky little
