Soul-Blues Carrying the deep rooted soul-blues tradition of the 1950s and '60s into the 21st century, guitarist Johnny Rawls shows respect for such artists as Otis Redding but does so in a manner that's completely contemporary. Receiving his early musical education from his grandfather, John Paul Newson, a blind guitarist who played in Mississippi, Rawls began his serious pursuit of music as a teenager backing such singers as Joe Tex and Z.Z. Hill. A longtime member of O.V. Wright's band, Rawls has opened for the likes of B.B. King, Little Milton and Bobby Blue Bland. Rawls will perform Friday, Jan. 7 and Saturday, Jan. 8 at Occasionally Blues in Greenville. For more information, call 242-6000. | |
