The short list

POP MUSIC

"My style is between gospel, blues and good hard soul music," says well-traveled guitarist and singer Johnny Rawls, who paid his dues in the 1970s and '80s backing O.V. Wright and Little Johnny Taylor. Raised in Mississippi but based in Milwaukee, Rawls is a music nomad who spends roughly 300 nights a year onstage, and serves as a producer, songwriter, solo artist and talent scout for the fine London label JSP Records. His latest album, "My Turn to Win," is a major treat for fans of classic soul – let's hope the title proves prophetic. 9 p.m. today–Saturday, Famous Dave's, 3001 Hennepin Av. S., Minneapolis.
